Rockies salvage one in the bay with big comeback from woke offense

The Colorado Rockies had gone on a sad six-game losing streak that included 40-plus innings of a handful of runs. But with a sudden stroke, late into the evening in San Francisco, the offense uncorked, showering seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to send the Giants out to sea as losers by the mark of 7-3.

Newly minted 2016 All-Star Nolan Arenado provided the big splash with a three-run homer that gave the visitors the lead. It was his first non-solo shot slammer since June 21. What was impressive about Arenado’s efforts is that it gave the Rockies starting pitching an actual chance to net a win.

Tyler Chatwood, who pitched for the first time after coming off the DL earlier in the day, provided five innings of three hit ball, allowing only one earned run. He wasn’t as sharp as possible – to be expected, making his first start off of injury – but he got the job done, just like the Colorado starters had done for a week to no avail.

DJ LeMahieu took his All-Star Game snub by smacking three hits and driving in two and also drawing a walk, raising his average to .328 on the season. Charlie Blackmon also continues to be a steady presence at the top of the lineup, grabbing a pair of hits and an RBI.

Nick Hundley also had a big game, getting a pair of hits, an RBI, and scoring two runs, he also lit a fire under the team with some animated “debates” with home plate umpire Carlos Torres and a few of the Giants players.

The fantastic Jenny Cavnar on ROOT Sports elicited the following quote from Hundley regarding an altercation featuring Angel Pagan: “I was having a conversation with the umpire. The hitter [Pagan] thought he was involved in it. But he wasn’t.”

That quote symbolizes how this team feels right now; backed into a corner, down but not out.

Lasting Impact

It was starting to look like the Rockies offense was six feet under but they arose like so many wonderful zombie movies in the seventh and preceded to eat the Giant’s brains. If they can win tomorrow, they set themselves up to salvage the first half of the season with the woeful Philadelphia Phillies coming into town for a four-game set.
