Cecil Lammey in, Edwards and Drotar out, plus more changes at The Fan

The ever-changing lineup at Denver’s top sports radio station is shifting yet again. Beginning Monday the wildly popular Cecil Lammey will replace Ryan Edwards and Shawn Drotar in the pre-noon time slot. The Fan Football Hour with Mike Evans will also fall by the wayside.

Lammey’s new show, “The Football Insider with Cecil Lammey” will air weekdays from 9-11 am. This is big news for football fans. Lammey is one of the Denver market’s most wired NFL commentators with years of experience studying the league from every angle.

For fans of the other pro sports, however, the timing of this seems odd. With the Super Bowl well in the rear view mirror, baseball just beginning to heat up, basketball nearing the home stretch and the hockey playoffs approaching, one might think that the Fan would embrace the roundness with which Edwards and Drotar approached their show. Instead, it’s going to be football, football and more football.

Mike Evans and Mark Schlereth will doubtlessly hammer every NFL story line during the morning show then hand-off to Cecil Lammey who will hammer them some more before handing off to Sandy Clough who will fly solo from 11-noon then couple with former NFL wide receiver Brandon Stokley for the next three hours.

Clough and Stokely will then give way to the Drive with Big Al and Dmac which is also a very football heavy show. Clearly, the Fan is moving in the direction of all football all the time, which makes sense given the popularity of the game and the fact that the Broncos are World Champions.

Football drives the ratings and pays the bills.

Still, there is an appetite in the market for coverage of the other sports. Hopefully that means that opportunities will be available at other outlets for the very talented Edwards and Drotar along with Nate Kreckman and the other local hosts that listeners miss. The “radio guy with ex football player” mix seems to be the formula at The Fan these days which leaves a vacuum for other stations and digital outlets to step into.

South Stands has also learned that the Fan Late Night with James Gomez and Josh Dover is being cancelled as well. The station will leave that slot available for ESPN programming including NBA and MLB game broadcasts. Like Edwards and Drotar, Gomez and Dover are skillful young broadcasters who only recently caught their on-air break. It’s sad to see all four hosts looking for new opportunities.
