Catching up with Kordell: "Let the Buffaloes roam, baby!"

University of Colorado legend Kordell Stewart was one of the stars of radio row at Super Bowl week, his new show “No Huddle” on TuneIn radio had him in the building every day and everybody wanted a chance to talk to one of the original big, mobile, strong-armed quarterbacks with Cam Newton on the Super Bowl slate.

We got our chance to talk about all that with “Slash”, but we weren’t going to let him get away without talking about the Golden Buffaloes. We covered a variety of topics but nothing got him more fired up than when we asked him about a prospect from his very own high school, Ca’Ron Baham, signing to become a Buffalo just days before.

“Yeah, man! That’s awesome!” he exclaimed.

Turns out Kordell is still very closely tied into John Ehret High Schol back in his home state of Louisiana.

“I’ve had the opportunity to go to the State Championship game, see a few playoff games and all but maybe one regular season game, I had a chance to meet everybody,”  he explained. “When it comes down to it, at John Ehret High School we have tons of talent and I’m an avid fan of any kid that comes from my neighborhood, has a great quality family and friends and I’m a fan of them getting a chance to explore the world, get a chance to see other things.

“Boulder, Colorado is a place where — if I can be an influence in some capacity where it would be legal— I would tell every kid to go see Colorado, man, take that visit,” he added. “I was that kid too that was coming out of high school trying to figure out where I wanted to go. To know that we have one of our very own coming from my high school to my alma mater is really cool.”

In all that time around the program, Kordell has had a chance to get a great look at Ca’Ron Baham the three-star athlete following his footsteps from Marrero, LA. to Boulder.

“He’s going to make a difference at the University of Colorado,” Stewart said without hesitation. “I think it’s wonderful, man. I had nothing to do with him going from the standpoint of conversation but he admired how I played the game back in the day so that may have had some level of influence. He played the game in high school just the way I did — fast, strong, great arm, great feet. They’re gonna love him in Boulder, trust me, they’re gonna love him. He may be a little bit faster than I was and I think he may be changing positions because of his abilities, that’s just how good we are when it comes to our athletes coming out of Louisiana.”

The addition of a young man he’s been close to is sure to rejuvenate his passion for the program, but that’s not to say he hasn’t been paying attention.

“I’ve been following, we got more TV coverage this year where I had an opportunity to follow it and I like the direction we’re trying to go in,” explained the one-time All-American. “It’s not like it used to be but nothing is when you have changes. With that change it’s going to take some time, that’s exactly what it is, it’s just going to take some time.”

“Liufau broke one of my records and [Sports Information Director] Dave Plati gave me his information,” he added. “I texted him and told him congratulations on breaking that record and I told him to heal up quick so he can go out and pad that record.”

As one of the best players in the school’s history, Stewart’s name is never far from the minds of Colorado fans, with that being said he is certain to come up even more as this season approaches with a trip to the stadium where Stewart forever cemented his name in college football folklore on the slate this year.

On Sept, 17. Colorado will travel to the Big House, the site of the “Miracle at Michigan” to take on the Wolverines and the man who famously threw the ball more than 70 yards back in ’94 is hoping to be in the building.

“That would be a great game to have an opportunity to cover and be a part of,” told the legendary quarterback. “Working with TuneIn I hope with the coverage that we have and what the bosses allow me to do, I’ll be able to possibly go there and maybe cover some of that stuff.

“To know they’re going back to the Big House, hopefully it doesn’t come down to a hail mary,” he added with a laugh. “But if it does, if the outcome could be the same with the same type of play, you know what, let the Buffaloes roam, baby!”
