Denver has no elite players on their roster who deserve to average over 30 min/gm. Yet, they have overachieving talent as a team when they balance out their strengths/weaknesses between the starters and the bench within an 8 or 9 man rotation. My eye test tells me that Nurkic and Faried start together. The Faried factor seems to be the most debated topic for Nugget fans. Here is how to look at the frontcourt rotations for right now (this season and maybe next season): Nurkic is the starting center plain and simple. Faried starts at PF because: 1. Denver needs an energy/hustle guy in the starting lineup who also helps Mudiay excel in his pick and roll game. 2. Nurkic is the Nuggets best post defender which balances some of Faried’s post defense weaknesses. 3. Jokic and Lauvergne are young developing core players who deserve 18-20 min off the bench-if Jokic is eventually better than Faried, he will consistently demonstrate that over time. Faried only has real trade value if he is combined with another good player, yet it still will be difficult to find another team to give up a star player or high draft pick. Therefore, let the be The Manimal with Nurkic, let Barton be the People’s Champ on the second unit, let Mudiay focus on assists and contain defense, make sure that Jokic and Lauvergne still get quality minutes–Overall, once the 8-9 man rotation is established, these core players will buy-in to playing better and more effective team defense once again. Malone must set this tone and define his roster now.
