The only tank in our dictionary relates to the war tanks of CJ running over people and Domata bull rushing OLs.

These are our tanks.

I wrote an article on another Broncos website, MHR, that players don’t tank, coaches do. If the Broncos wanted to tank they could play mostly reserves, put even marginally hurt starters on IR and promote players from the practice squad or free agency. Also sitting healthy players like Talib, Miller, Ray, Barrett, Harris Jr., Gotsis, Peko, etc. would protect those players for next season or for trading. You can’t blame star players for tanking if they aren’t on the field!

Why is that any different than not playing your best players in games that don’t count during the pre-season? Since about four games ago, the Broncos could be pretty sure future games weren’t going to matter. Why not make the most of a bad situation going forward?

Of course the fans aren’t going to like it now but it may mean a much better 2018 season.

It’s all about having a winning culture which the Broncos, Patriots, Steelers, have cultivated to great success over the years. When you tank that sets a bad precedent. It bothered me to hear from the media and players that fans wanted to embrace the tank. Who are these people? Can you honestly say when you pulled up a chair to watch the Jet or Indy game ” I hope we lose”?

Right now that winning culture is dead in Denver. Eight losses in a row is Browns country. Moving up the draft may make a difference toward recovery of that culture. It’s rare that the Broncos are so bad so early in the season. This is an unusual opportunity. Besides, you’re assuming that the reserves won’t fight to win games. They probably won’t win them but that doesn’t mean that they won’t play their best.

Don’t forget that this is a business. Sometimes you need to take a step back to move forward again. Like I said, the fans wouldn’t like it. But we don’t like how they’re playing now. Give the backups some playing time and start gearing up for 2018.
