I thought Varly should’ve come out to play that first goal. I cringed on the empty play along the boards by Lindholm that led to the 4th goal.. I didn’t think Z or Girard were bad, still better than most of the D play the last few years. I think Girard needs to be more north/south than he’s been lately though. Overall, I continue to feel like this team doesn’t play with a big enough chip on their shoulder, and I think they need to. Particularly anyone not named Mackinnon, Landeskog, and Johnson. Compher might be the closest to bringing it consistently the way those guys do, everybody else needs to find a way to be better on a regular basis, IMO.

Here’s what I want next game:

Landeskog – MacKinnon – Rantanen
Kerfoot – Soderberg – Andrighetto
Jost – Compher – Yakupov
Comeau – Toninato – Nieto

(on defensive zone draws, Kerfoot/Yakupov can be replaced by Comeau)

PP1: Landeskog – MacKinnon – Rantanen
Barrie – Yakupov (get him the puck and have him shoot it)

PP2: Jost – Soderberg – Kerfoot
Gerard/EJ – Andrighetto/Compher

How ’bout your d-pairings and rotation?

Based on the way they’re all currently playing:

Zadorov (not every shift) – EJ
Lindholm – Barberio
Nemeth – Barrie

Then double-shift whoever is playing well with EJ

I like Soda as second line center, but here’s what I would want to see:

Landeskog – MacKinnon – Rantanen
Comeau – Soderberg – Compher
Wilson – Kerfoot – Yakupov
Andrighetto – Jost – Nieto

Girard – Johnson
Nemeth – Barrie
Zadorov – Lindholm/Barberio

I should’ve mentioned Blake Comeau, he also belongs in the not part of the problem category pretty consistently. There’s been a lot of soft play, outside of those guys and Zadorov, who has been better lately too, aside from making a few really glaring mistakes, I’ve thought.

We all know the concept of “playing with the lead”. You hear it all throughout sports. I don’t know if it reveals that deep down the Avs do not truly believe in their abilities, but already this season (and certainly last year) how many times have we seen them quickly give back a key advantage gained? Landeskog scores almost before you’ve fully settled down on the couch. Great! Just the boost that we needed, right? What an envious beginning! And how long did we hold this hope-injecting position? 25 seconds. It’s like we’re saying to our opposition, “Look, we both know that we are not worthy of this advantage, and while we appreciate the gesture, we’re politely returning it. But thank you.”

My heart dropped when we did that, along with my hopes of having a chance.

Compher was slashed on the hands when he was trying to shoot on his second breakaway, it should have been a penalty shot.

Need to add a Bednar grade consistently. IMO, he has been one of the worst Avs all season. Never ahead of the opposing coach in anything.

As the team captain, Gabe Landeskog has got to stop taking undisciplined penalties. That trip 200 feet from his goal was brutal. When is he going to learn? This is why 4 games was appropriate. He has shown and is showing that he has a tough time adjusting his style of play.
