Nuggets use 31-6 third-quarter run to top Nets

Needing an offensive pick-me-up after beginning the year as a bottom-10 unit on that end of the floor, the final two games of the Denver Nuggets’ five-game East Coast schlep that takes the Nuggets from Brooklyn Sunday to New York where they’ll face the Knicks Monday, couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Nuggets got back on track offensively in their 124-111 win over the Nets against a Brooklyn team that’s fielded one of the league’s worst defenses over the past few years. The Knicks aren’t too far behind.

Denver gained separation from Brooklyn during a 31-6 run to start the third quarter and headed into the fourth with a commanding 100-84 lead. The Nets went on a run of their own at the end of the third and briefly into the fourth but couldn’t overcome Denver’s hot shooting.

In total, seven Nuggets’ players reached double-figures. Nikola Jokic scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Jamal Murray had his best offensive outing of the year and tallied 26 points on 8-14 shooting and went 2-3 from distance Murray was also a perfect 8-8 from the line.

Wilson Chandler, who had struggled offensively over Denver’s first five games of the season, broke out in a big way against the Nets. After only converting on two threes heading into Sunday’s matchup, Chandler went 2-3 from deep against Brooklyn and finished with 18 points on a clean 7-11 shooting.

Emmanuel Mudiay also had his second-consecutive positive outing running Denver’s second unit. Mudiay scored 15 points to go with five assists and just one turnover. Paul Millsap finished with a double-double; 13 points and 11 rebounds.
