The Colorado Avalanche got some bad medical news Monday morning, when it was revealed that defenseman Patrik Nemeth – off to a great start as one of the NHL’s plus-minus leaders – sustained a shoulder injury and has flown back to Denver for further evaluation.
Nemeth hurt the shoulder in the following fight Saturday night with former Dallas Stars teammate Tyler Seguin:

Nemeth, claimed on waivers before the season, was a plus-7, with three assists, in his first six games as an Av. Avs coach Jared Bednar told the team’s website that Anton Lindholm will take his place in the lineup. The Avs will play the Nashville Predators Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena.
There was some good medical news for the Avs, however: Rookie forward Tyson Jost (knee) practiced with the team and is probable to play against the Predators.

This news (about Nemeth) makes me not only sad, but angry. I have loved what he has brought to our blueliner squad. And now he’s sidelined. I’m sure I’m in the small minority, but whereas I love the physical nature of hockey (just as I love it in the NFL), I hate the fighting. Yep, you read that right. I think it is a regrettable relic from a thuggier bygone era. I have discussed this numerous times with advocates for fighting in hockey, and don’t want to do so again here. Suffice it to say that I find every pro-fighting argument thoroughly unconvincing. No one doubts the physicality of football, including the collisions. But if you throw a punch you will be kicked out of the game, fined, and probably suspended. Hockey should be the same, but try telling that to the average fan. The insults begin to fly. The other day we had just won an important face-off, only to have the game stop b/c a fight interrupted the game and its flow. Ok, so now you all know. I’m a wuss who loves the game of hockey, but feels the tolerance for fighting in it an unfortunate intrusion. And I’m really ticked about losing Nemeth for any length of time.
