First game of the year: 7-0 win vs. St. Louis Cardinals. Morton scored inside the 5 on a naked bootleg right, sprinting at sun-dial speed to the northeast end zone of old Mile High — place went NUTS. Season unfolded from there. Lost to Raiders once in the regular season, Dallas twice (one was worthless, in the last game of the year; Broncos were 12-1 entering that game). In that Raiders playoff game, noteworthy that Madden-led Raiders were the defending Super Bowl champs, and they beat the Steelers, winners the year prior to that, to get to the AFC Championship game. Nothing matches winning for the first time. The Orange Crush was already in place; team just lacked the leadership to bundle all three phases … lacked a QB. (Miller had an teen-age unpaid intern that year assigned to the defensive staff; son of a friend, a kid who later went on to utter greatness in New England. I think he’s still coaching . . . )

It was a great team, great coach, and they had great fans like you, my former boss!
