Chatwood injured, Colorado smacked; Mets take series from Rockies

The Colorado Rockies have lost 15 of their past 20 games and Saturday’s may have been the worst yet. They got smacked from the very first pitch by the New York Mets, eventually losing 9-3.

Colorado ended up having a solid few frames to end the game, but it was after most had already turned their TVs off. They’ve now lost 13 of the last 15 on the road.

Tyler Chatwood started and exited after just one out because of an undisclosed injury. Before he left, though, the Mets handed him the loss. He allowed three walks, four earned runs, most of which came via a three-run shot from Jay Bruce. The Mets added their fourth run with Chris Rusin in the game.

Chatwood’s loss may lead to some problems as the Rockies try to limit innings with their young starters. Between Chatwood and Gray’s first two starts after the break, the club has only gotten 2.1 innings from their starters, a recipe for disaster and leaving them in a poor spot for Sunday’s series finale.

Rusin ran up his pitch count in a poor third inning where the club allowed three runs, including a two-run double to Lucas Duda. In the third inning Mets pitcher, Seth Lugo knocked a solo shot over the fence to make it 8-0 after just three innings.

Rusin only strung together two-and-two-thirds innings then Kyle Freeland came in. Yes that Kyle Freeland, who almost threw a no-hitter on Sunday, came in from the bullpen. He ended up tossing three hitless innings in his first pro relief appearance.

The Rockies scored in the sixth too. Gerardo Parra hit a sacrifice fly and the Rockies didn’t get shutout. But wait, there’s more, Raimel Tapia knocked a double and a second run in the sixth which cut the lead to six.

Charlie Blackmon drove in Tony Wolters on a triple to add another in the seventh which made it 8-3 Mets.

Jake McGee threw a hitless inning too as the Rockies strung together 14 outs without a hit but Adam Ottavino ended the streak in the eighth. Jose Reyes, the Rockies’ highest-paid player thanks to a $22-million contract dump that they had to keep paying toward to get the Mets to accept him, hit a massive solo shot for the final Mets’ run.

Indignity is thy name right now for the Colorado Rockies.
