Rockies top prospects Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon are breaking baseball

DENVER – While in the past it may have been easy for Colorado Rockies fans to turn their eyes from the major league club and look down to the minors at the future—this year—it has become harder. Both because a big part of the future is already wearing Purple Pinstripes and because the play at the big league level has been phenomenal.

But two Colorado Rockies prospects that have been in baseball’s top 100 at some point or another are hotter than the Large Hadron Collider. And just like the collider which smashes gold together to achieve a split second temperature of a universal high of 7.2 trillion degrees Fahrenheit, these two golden Rox prospects are smashing baseballs.

Rockies No. 1 prospect Brendan Rodgers led High-A Lancaster to the California League first half championship last night with a 2-for-4 performance which included a double and a homer. Rodgers performance came a night after his 23-game hit streak was snapped. Rodgers played in game No. 48 of his season on Sunday, he leads the Cal League in batting average .400 (84-for-210) and is second in doubles (21) as well as home runs (12). Rodgers currently has a wRC+ of 203, which means he’s creating runs at a clip 103 percent better than the league average, this mark would be the highest mark in the history of the league by over 10 points. Rodgers .400 batting average is also the highest among players with at least 220 plate appearances since Jose Altuve batted .408 in 2011 in 52 games (his wRC+ was 169.)

Rodgers was the third overall section in the 2015 draft and we fully expect him to be called up to Double-A by the end of the month.

The Jethawks are 38-31 and are sending the most players to the Cal League All-Star game.

Meanwhile, another Rockies prospect is mashing above 200 wRC+ and that’s Ryan McMahon in Triple-A. McMahon went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI last night for the Isotopes in their 8-4 win. He is an obscene 12-for-15 over his last three games with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI. In his first 15 games with Albuquerque, he is batting .460 (29-for-63) with 11 runs, eight doubles, five home runs and 19 RBI, good for a 230 wRC+.

McMahon slashed .326/.390/.536 this year at Double-A Hartford as he repeated the level. He had six home runs, 32 RBI and 28 runs scored in 208 plate appearances (49 games) for the Yard Goats.

McMahon, now the Rockies No. 5 prospect and second highest position player prospect to Rodgers still in the minors, was rated as high as the No. 36 prospect in all of baseball coming into 2016 before a bad year dropped him. We expect for him to be in the majors at some point this season, the only question is how do you get the 2013 second round pick onto the roster.
