Rockies reflect on Trevor Story's "super athletic" and "clutch" catch

DENVER – Life is a funny thing. And one of the reasons why that’s true is because life contains the game of baseball. The game has been around for nearly 150 years and yet you can see something new every day. No amount of experience can tell you with certainty what will happen next.

“That’s the beauty of this game,” says Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black.

So when Trevor Story left his feet in the second inning of Thursday night’s game between the Rox and the San Francisco Giants, nobody could fathom everything that would come after, starting with him landing on the ground with the ball in his glove.

Completely out of context, it was a brilliant display of defensive ability. In context? Well, BSN Denver asked his teammates — several of them with gloves of gold in their trophy cases — about a play that saved two runs, and maybe, a game:

DJ LeMahieu: “It was a super athletic play. Timing was really good. That was a special play. That was incredible. It’s [a hard play] because that ball is moving, that’s a tough catch spinning away from you.”

Nolan Arenado:

“That was unbelievable. Probably the best play I’ve seen him make and he makes great plays all the time. That was up there. That was huge. If they score there, we might be losing. You don’t know because they came back. It was a game changer.”

Bud Black

“There are momentum shifts continually throughout a game. That was a big one, that was a huge one. That was a great play. We had a lead, we had the momentum on our side, it sorta shifts back to them, and Trev makes a great play. That was a great play.”

Ian Desmond:

“That was awesome, man. That was clutch. We needed that bad. He’s been doing that all year. Nothing surprises me when he’s got the glove on.”

Because it is such a difficult and unusual play for an infielder, we asked LeMahieu what his best catch ever was going back on a ball. He laughed. “Probably one in little league. Nothing close to that, that’s for sure,” said the major league Gold-Glover.
