DENVER – Charlie Blackmon has been really good but he’s just trying not to be bad.

It sounds insane to hear the National League’s Player of the Week admit that he just doesn’t want to be bad at his craft and have him attribute that to his success but that’s Blackmon for you. The possible NL’s best player in the month of May and MVP candidate leads the majors in hits, tripes, RBI, total bases. His weekly honor was the fifth of his career as he hit .400 with three homers and 12 RBI over 30 at-bats.

Blackmon continues to get better but it was his dry exchange with the media today that kept it real.

Blackmon: No. I don’t feel that dialed in. I feel hit or miss.

Q: You haven’t felt bad have you?

Blackmon: I try to stay away from feeling bad. I don’t feel bad.

Q: I don’t know what that means.

Blackmon: If you’re not bad then you’re better than bad so that’s where I’m at.

Q: You haven’t been good yet?

Blackmon: Sometimes I’m good. I just try to not be bad.

Q: How do you stay in a routine?

Blackmon: I try to avoid answering questions like that.

Q: Do you get any cool swag for player or the week?

Blackmon: They give you a watch. They’re all the same.

Q: Do you strap one to you ankle now? Running out of wrists.

Blackmon: Yeah, I could.

Q: Can you trade up for a better prize like at a carnival?

Blackmon: I need a few more tickets first.

He later added, “I fell like sometimes I’m not in control. Not in control of every single pitch. Sometimes I’m swinging at balls and taking strikes but I can still get hits. When things are bad I think I can be pitched to very easily… I try to stay loose or get more rest.”

Blackmon is OPS’ing .929 and has been the second best centerfielder in baseball to Mike Trout over the past calendar year. His dominance from the leadoff spot has led the Rockies to their good start, despite the tick above bad Blackmon say he might be playing at.
