DENVER – On Wednesday afternoon, German Marquez — at the ripe age of 22-years-old — pitched the sixth best game in Colorado Rockies (according to Game Score) with eight innings of three-hit, shutout baseball against the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs.

But he also delivered the biggest hit of that game and the one that arguably swung the series in favor of Colorado, lining a two-out, two-RBI single to left field in the seventh.

Now that’s “Laying the Wood.”

It was quite the day for the young man. Marquez got off to a bit of an uneven start to the 2017 season, starting the year with the club but never making an appearance before being sent down, coming back up to get knocked around a little in his first two starts, only to rebound and play maybe the best all-around game of anyone on the roster so far this season. He joined an ever-growing cast of characters including Kyle Freeland, Antonio Senzatela, and Jeff Hoffman who have been surprising the uninitiated this season for the Colorado Rockies.

We ranked Marquez sixth on our pre-season Top 25 Under 25 list, surmising, “If he continues to develop the way he did last season, then the Rockies have another legitimate potential ace to go alongside Jon Gray, Jeff Hoffman, and Kyle Freeland in the 25-and-under-but-ready-right-now class.”

So far, that has played out to some fantastic early results for the Rockies who are 23-13 and hold a two-and-a-half game lead in the National League West.
