Colorado Rockies table setters setting the table again

About a week ago, Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black delivered a syllogism that rang true as both irrefutable logic and classic Bud Black; disarming, funny, and still a little enlightening to the thought process.

He reminded us that Charlie Blackmon, among others, is an everyday player. “And you know what everyday players, do?” he asked. “They play every day.”

Other than this being perfect for a t-shirt also featuring Blackmon’s beard or DJ LeMahieu‘s glove, it was insight into how Black likes to not overthink certain aspects of the game, and maintain faith that certain players will do what they do because … well … that’s what they do.

For Blackmon and LeMahieu over the last several seasons, this has meant being a presence for consistency both in the lineup and out in the field. And while the defensive work has been steady, neither got off to the offensive start they were hoping for after blazing through spring training.

“These guys are gonna get going,” Black told us before the team departed for a 10-game west coast road trip. And so far they have.

Over their last seven games, the Rockies table setters are setting the table again. Because that’s what table setters do.

In the last week, Blackmon is hitting .276/.300/.517 with a pair of home runs. Most importantly, the Rockies centerfielder is getting it done when it matters most, driving in six runs.

LeMahieu has gotten back to being among the most difficult outs in baseball slashing .435/.519/.696 with a home run and four walks.

Blackmon and LeMahieu are still waiting for a few other big boppers to join their resurgence, most notably Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story. But for Nolan Arenado, who remains as clutch as ever, and apparently for Mark Reynolds, the table is now being set. Time for the Rockies to start eating.
