Examining the timeline of Joe Tumpkin's domestic violence case

BOULDER – Using dates and details provided by our own sources, in addition to those provided by the Daily Camera, Sports Illustrated and University of Colorado’s Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano, we compiled a timeline of what happened and when in Joe Tumpkin’s domestic violence case.

Feb. 2015 – Nov. 21, 2016: Alleged 80 or so episodes of abuse by Tumpkin on his now ex-girlfriend (we’ll call her Emma).

Dec. 9, 2016: Trisha MacIntyre, the wife of Colorado’s head coach Mike MacIntyre, receives a Facebook message from Emma.

Dec. 9, 2016: Mike MacIntyre and Emma are on the phone for 34-minutes, she informs him of what has been going on, but she gives the coach no evidence. She calls to make sure Tumpkin has a support system and that he will be safe.

Dec. 10, 2016: Emma calls MacIntyre to let him know there is easily uncoverable evidence that could put him at fault in some way.

Dec. 9-10, 2016: MacIntyre lets athletic director Rick George into the loop.

Dec. 9-12, 2016: Chancellor DiStefano is let into the loop ‘shortly after’ George himself found out.

Dec. 9-12, 2016: Attorney Jon Banashek is hired, he informs MacIntyre and George to not talk to Emma or Tumpkin, at least about anything other than football.

Dec. 13, 2016: Banashek contacts Emma, she asks for a restraining order and insists she wants Tumpkin to be safe.

Dec. 13, 2016: Emma calls MacIntyre after being informed he would not talk to her, he did not talk to her.

Dec. 15, 2016: Emma texts MacIntyre alerting him that she wanted to give him a heads up that she is filing a report with the police.

Dec. 16, 2016: MacIntyre gives Tumpkin play-calling duties following Jim Leavitt’s departure

Dec. 16-17, 2016 5:56 pm: Emma calls MacIntyre, he doesn’t answer. She leaves a voicemail stating this will be her last call to him and that she doesn’t want him or CU to be blindsided that she is flying to town on the 18th and will file a report on the 19th.

Dec. 16-17, 2016, 7:14 pm: Banashek calls Emma and asks what she is planning to do.

Dec. 18, 2016: Emma flies to Denver.

Dec. 19, 2016: Emma meets with Detective Dale Hammell of the Broomfield PD. She tells him everything.

Dec. 20, 2016: A temporary restraining order against Tumpkin is signed by a judge in Boulder court.

Dec. 21, 2016: Hammell asks Banashek to bring Tumpkin in for questioning, Hammell is denied.

Dec. 24, 2016: The Buffaloes fly to Texas for the Alamo Bowl.

Dec. 30 – N/A: Tumpkin reportedly interviews for defensive coordinator jobs at several programs.

Dec. 30, 2016: Tumpkin signs and acknowledges a receipt for a temporary restraining order.

Jan. 5, 2017: Tumpkin goes into questioning with the Broomfield PD.

Jan. 6, 2017: Colorado Athletics finds out about the temporary restraining order by way of Daily Camera reporter Mitchell Byars who breaks the story hours later.

Jan. 6, 2017: BSN Denver becomes aware of the story and is informed by multiple sources that George wants to fire Tumpkin on the spot, he is advised against it.

Jan 10, 2017: Tumpkin is indefinitely suspended following an official police investigation.

Jan. 25-26 2017: Tumpkin decides he will plea to allow the protection order to become permanent.

Jan. 27, 2017: The protection order becomes permanent, after being signed by a judge.

Jan. 27, 2017: BSN Denver is told Joe Tumpkin is out at CU.

Jan. 28, 2017: Colorado announces Tumpkin has resigned after being asked to do so by the school.

Jan. 31, 2017: Local district attorney files felony assault charges against Tumpkin.

Feb. 1, 2017: Tumpkin turns himself in and is released on $10,000 bond.

Feb. 1, 2017: The date Tumpkin’s contract was set to expire.

Feb. 3, 2017: Sports Illustrated’s story from Emma’s perspective breaks.

Feb. 9, 2017: Tumpkin is due back in court.
