Great analysis Harrison. Our philosophy on defense changed from covering three pointers to covering the paint and the adjustment caused us to get worse on defense. We need a middle ground.

Seems like it also occurred when Jokic took over the reins in the center. Obviously, Malone has to go back to covering the jumps and threes and forgo the drives. This means Jok and Nurk have to stay closer to the rim. The wings and guards need to rotate more effectively.

SA and the Nugs both have overpowering offensive power, #1 and #5 I believe. It will be interesting to see exactly what SA does to have the #1 defensive team also.

What do they do? Is it personnel or planning, talent or technique?

I think it is game planning. They are trying to do what the coach has them doing. So he needs to adjust.

I would also like to hear what Gallo and the other vets think the problem is.

A team wins because of trust, synergy and camaraderie. I hope we can still have this.

I am still behind Malone, but he has to get off the blame game, although some of it was to motivate and defer anger. But his defensive coach has to offer good suggestions or their inconsistency will continue. I still believe we have a top 15 talent on our squad.

I like Malone’s intensity alot, but throwing chairs and announcing to the press that Denver is the worst defensive team in the NBA are just SOS flares stating the obvious. The real survival moves will be made when Malone interjects more defensive effort and intensity into the starting lineup and bench rotation via the threat of lost playing time for individual players. That means he has to analyze which individual players he can get more defense out of based on their talent. It does not mean everybody is treated equally as far as what is expected of them defensively. The best example of this is Jokic- he is an average defender, but he is so important to the offensive efficiency of the team that he should play 75% of the game. Gary Harris good to great defender. Wilson Chandler good defender. Will Barton good defender. Arthur good defender. Nurkic decent defender as a backup. These are the players that we should not have to worry about. The next group of players defensively are the effort and hustle guys–Juancho and Murray–even though they may have some liabilities defensively, they display a sense of urgency on the defensive end which the whole team needs. Well, that is 8 players so far so who is left? I bet if you run the metrics/analytics together with the eye test, it shows that Mudiay, Nelson, Gallinari and Faried have the least defensive impact on the team. The problem is that at least 3 out of those 4 players get heavy minutes each game. Until the Nuggets acquire a rim protector to play alongside Jokic, Malone should reward the defensive/hustle guys with more playing time. Mudiay is maturing offensively, but he should not be given a pass defensively-he is the one guy out of those four that has the youth and the talent to be a good defender. Coach Malone please use your authority to motivate and to teach good defense through the allocation of playing time.
