We’re into the W’s now for the season grades, so it’s time to put David Warsofsky’s 2017-18 contributions to the Avalanche under the microscope:

Overview

This will be like trying to give a review to the actor who makes just a cameo in a movie, but let’s do this. David Warsofsky was a guy signed to a two-way contract before last season. A lefty-shot, 5-foot-9 defenseman with a reputation as an offensive guy. He started the season in San Antonio, but got a call-up for a Jan. 25 game in St. Louis. He would go on to play 15 more regular-season games for the Avs, most coming toward the end of the season, when injuries struck the D.

He would finish with no goals and five assists. He would play four of the six first-round playoff games against Nashville, with no point and a plus-1.

There were a few games I thought Warsofsky played pretty well. A March 13 game in Minnesota in which he played more than 13 minutes, assisted on a goal and was a plus 2; A March 20 game in Chicago in which he picked up another assist in a big win; Game 3 of the playoffs in which he played nearly 14 minutes of plus-2 hockey in a win over the Predators.

There were some shaky moments too. He was credited with exactly one hit in the 16 regular-season games. So, not the most physical presence out there. His Corsi for percentage was 48.4. He was caught out of position more than once. But I thought, overall, he did a decent job for the club. I’m in a generous mood today, obviously.

Biggest Moment

I’m going to go with that March 13 win in Minnesota. He moved the puck well in the game and did some nice things offensively in one of the biggest wins of the season.

What’s Next

Warsofsky is an unrestricted free agent again, just like he was last summer. He has yet to sign with another team for the coming season. Let’s hope he catches on with an NHL team, but there is always Europe for guys like him.

*Woops, I can’t read. I’m an idiot. I thought originally Warsofsky signed a one-year deal last summer. Wrong, it’s two. He’ll be at Avs training camp this fall and should be a staple of the Colorado Eagles roster, if he doesn’t make the big club, that is.

Final Grade

C+

Warsofsky was given a chance by the Avs. He can’t say he was denied that. Did he take advantage of that chance? I mean, the numbers don’t look too bad. Five points in 16 games is not a terrible ratio, and he was a plus player (I know, I know, plus-minus means nothing).

Like Brooks, he was here. That’s something anyway. And he’s got another chance for new things with this club.
