AJ, good game summary. Grub was good, loved hearing Connor McGahey say “Save by Grubauer”! Yes, we are all eating some humble pie regarding Nichushkin. Good for him and the Avs. That was a great shot on the SHG. Looking forward to the return of our starters and a healthy line up.

Just want to throw a thought out there before the impending Hall-cast. Great player, but I am extremely wary of the price. I am assuming it would cost a 1st and Timmins +. The thing is, I think the Avs are good enough to win a cup without him, as they are currently built. I get that winning cups is what its all about, and Hall would certainly help with that this year, but it would certainly come at the price of some pieces the Avs might need in order to sustain as a perennial contender for the next 6-8 years. I don’t care about the 1st so much, but losing Timmins (or similar) would sting.

Side thought: it might be a tad reactionary, but I think I’d extend Val Nichushkin right now at the right price. I’m not sure it would get it done, but if he’d sign for 1.5 x 2 I’d be mighty tempted if I were Sakic.

Agreed re Hall. He is a free agent at the end of the year anyway, so Avs would potentially give up Timmons/1st/+ to effectively get Hall for the balance of this season plus a head start on signing him for longer term. Doesn’t seem worth it when we can just try to sign him in free agency while hanging on to current assets.

Great game overall from the boys. As for MacK and his play in the d-zone, I’ve been seeing that more the last few weeks as well. I’ve honestly wondered when this would happen for him. We all know how close he is to Sid and how they push each other, I was wondering who and when would challenge him to really bear down on that part of his game. Would it be Bednar? Sakic? Sid? Or was it just the accumulation of injuries over the last several weeks that would force him to step up there? Whatever it was, I’m really happy to see it and we all saw it with Ovi when Trotz showed up and showed him the value of playing 200 feet, they won a Cup. Get some rest tonight boys, we need to have a good showing tomorrow to welcome back Landy and/or Burky with a proper beat down of the Habs.

Mostly agree, especially on Nishoosh and Calvert. Not sure I’d pick out Makar as having a particularly poor game. If anything, the forwards…Kadri/Compher/Nieto and Jost/O’Connor/Tynan weren’t good, and when the forwards aren’t skating well, it does stress the blue liners. Jost did nothing. Nieto/Compher played poorly. Those 3 were certainly way worse than Makar’s play, to me. The fourth line of Bellemare/Calvert/Nishoosh was outstanding. Z and Sam, outstanding, as well.

Why isn’t DNVR covering Avs games on the road?

‘- Nichoosh as “Atlas handing the world to somebody else”…
– Calvert as an “adult Dennis the Menace bringer of chaos for the opposing team”…
AJ, I’m really enjoying all the evocative little details of your writing style!

Seems to me that in the same way Nate and Sid egg each other to be even more incredible players, you and Rudo egg each other on to be even more incredible superstar evocative writers…
🙂

We know you and Rudo have the stats and numbers down cold… but the way you both bring the stories to life is a real pleasure.

With Evan as Landy, and you and Rudo as Nate and the Moose, our DNVR hockey team is becoming the Avs among the other journalistic teams.

Avs have a streak like this going and Landy is getting ready to come back into the fold. Hard not to be insanely excited for how this season could play out.

Great article as always and awesome post-game podcast last night. When you started giggling, I started giggling for the same reason before you started explaining why this is so funny. I was scanning the Avalanche headlines for any traction on the Hall rumors and game across a gem in Forbes by Jordan Horrobin discussing Mac’s cheap RFA deal. Mac’s quote, “On my next deal, I’ll take less again. Because I want to win with this group.”

More giggles.
