Rockies drop final road series of the season

The Colorado Rockies dropped the rubber match of their three game series to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon, once again gaining little traction on offense.

After a pair of close games that were decided late, this one had similar notes but was an entirely different tune. A tight contest throughout the vast majority of the game, the big eighth-inning outburst from the Giants allowed the home town club to run away with a rather comfortable win in hindsight.

Kyle Freeland made his second appearance back off the IL in what will be his final appearance of the season, continuing to build upon his strength and overall stuff for a rebound in 2020.

In the first, he gave up a run on three hits, all singles, with the lone RBI coming from Kevin Pillar. He only allowed one walk over the next two innings, working around the edges of the zone and producing the kind of off-balance swings needed in order for him to have success.

The Rockies tied the game in the fourth on a single off the bat of Nolan Arenado and Sam Hilliard’s second triple and 10th extra-base hit of the season.

San Francisco answered immediately with a long home run for Mike Yastrzemski who pulled one deep over the wall in right-center field against incoming reliever Jesus Tinoco.

Garrett Hampson kept his hot finish to the season by singling in Yonathan Daza with two outs in the fifth to once again tie the game.

Unfortunately, as has been the case far too often, the opposing team got it right back. Following an Alex Dickerson double, Maurico Dubon singled to right field and a misplay by Hilliard allowed the runner to score easily.

Dubon homered in the seventh and San Francisco put up four home runs in the eighth against Wes Parsons and Bryan Shaw to make it an 8-3 final.

The Rockies will return home to Denver for a final three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field to close out the 2019 season.
