I have a problem with the concept that a Toronto (Large market team) cave equals a market comp. There has to be some middle ground here. Otherwise, we should see teams start using Kevin Leblanc as a comp. That said, I’ve always felt that $10.5 x 6 or 7 is probably reasonable.
Market size isn’t really relevant when you’re operating under the same salary cap rules. Colorado can afford whatever they want. They aren’t Nashville or Winnipeg who have to be very careful with every dollar they spend. The Avs have frequently spent money on players to go away so there isn’t a small-market argument that holds any water. The Avs and Leafs face the same salary cap maximum. The market for a player doesn’t change because one team who paid up is in a bigger market. The salary cap is the same. That’s the bottom line.
