Rockies dominated by Syndergaard, drop series to Mets

The Sunday afternoon matchup between the Colorado Rockies and the New York Mets at Citi Field heavily favored the home team on paper and that’s exactly how things played out.

Jeff Hoffman, who has struggled to find success in the big leagues since a stretch of games way back in May of 2017, flirted with a decent game after early issues but fell apart late.

Meanwhile, Noah Syndergaard was the best version of himself, a pitcher who can be a nightmare to line up when he is on.

It all amounted to a 6-1 loss for the visitors who didn’t score until they were down to their final out.

Hoffman had a pair of runners aboard after throwing just three pitches but bounced back for a strikeout. As it began to look like he might escape or at least minimize the damage, he hung a changeup to Todd Frazier who blasted it into the bleachers in left to put the Mets up 3-0.

As it turned out, that was all they would need.

Hoffman did respond by striking out the side in the second and cruising through the third but the Mets got to him again in the fourth.

The two-put rally saw Adeiny Hechavarria reach on an infield single when Daniel Murphy was unable to handle a throw in the dirt after an incredible effort from Nolan Arenado.

He then swiped second and scored when Carlos Gomez dropped a single into shallow right-center field.

They poured it on in the fifth, getting a leadoff walk and another big swing of the bat from Frazier, a double to left. A J.D. Davis triple made it 6-0 and ran Hoffman from the game.

Chad Bettis and Carlos Estevez pitched the rest of the game for Colorado, allowing just one baserunner.

But on the other side, the Rockies managed just two hits and three walks in the game as the man they call Thor looked every bit like a God of Thunder on the mound.

Colorado’s lone run came in the ninth when Charlie Blackmon extended his on-base streak to 20 games and came around on a double from David Dahl.

The Rockies fell to 33-31.
