Keep Gruby as starting G. Already have him signed to a more than reasonable starting G contract. No Bobrovsky.

Panarin would be a bit of a waste of cash because he wouldn’t have a 2C to feed him, and he plays 0 defense.

Skinner I might be ok with because he at least plays some D.

Who says he’d be on the second line? Here are some potential lines:

Landy-Mac-Panarin
Kerfoot/Wilson-Jost/Kaut-Rants
Kerfoot/Wilson-Jost/Kaut-Compher
Soda-Kamanev-Calvert

That’s not a bad top 9, and it would certainly provide some secondary scoring. They didn’t do too bad this year. MacRanteSkog they had 7 guys with 10+ goals and 3 with 40+ points.

Panarin is a left wing and would be one of the few right handed shot forwards on the team. It wouldn’t make a lot of sense to play him on the right side. I wouldn’t want pull Landskog off the first line either. I think a Panarin – Jost – Rantanen (or Kaut and leave 96 on the first line) second line would be pretty damned effective.

I’d probably put Panarin next to MacKinnon and then Kerfoot on that right side. Then go Landeskog with Jost and Rantanen as your starting top six. Adding a talent like Panarin though means there isn’t really a wrong answer, just a work in progress to find the right chemistry. He’s a special player

I think renegotiating Nathan Mac’s contract would be a good idea. He’ our best player but could wind up being the 5th or 6th highest paid. Not a healthy situation. Good warning on free agency which is being pimped on other sites. Personally I feel that heavy involvement in the FA market is a result of poor scouting, poor drafting, and poor development. I hate free agent signings.

Cant renegotiate. Hating free agency is like hating the draft or trading. It’s a team building tool. How effective a team is with it will determine a lot.

Obviously AJ you are correct, but I have an easier time accepting a rookie bust, then free agent but. There’s a lot of history that should help a signing team, then there’ the number of years on the contract if he doesn’t work out. We got lucky with Carl after his performance in the 48 point season, but having 4.5 million on the books for five years if he hadn’t of picked it up. That would be hard to take. I think three year for Clark and Cole was too long, but they won’t sign without a lot of years. At least with draft choices and rookies if they don’t make it, it doesn’t cost a fortune and you don’t have to live with them forever.

AJ, do you have a hunch on which team Kraut will be playing on come next season?

I think it’s a fair assumption that he starts in the AHL with the Eagles but he’ll get an extended look in the preseason to win a job on the Avs.

Landy is a left-winger and is left-handed shooting. Having Panarin on the right side as a righty would mean he and Landy would be opposite each other, much like LHD and RHD do. We’ve seen how effective Mac is at finding Barrie off the rush coming down the middle, imagine if that were Panarin or Barrie. Having more options that way could be deadly.

You could just about mix up the top 6 any way you want and get two scary lines. I just don’t think the original commenter’s point about Panarin not having a 2C to feed him is valid.

It’s optimal for RHD to play on the right side and LHD to play on the left side because that way their sticks are nearest the boards when they’re facing away from the net they’re defending (no matter whether they’re playing in the offensive or defensive zone – the advantage is the same whether they’re trying to clear pucks or hold them in at the point). It’s less critical for forwards (although it’s nice to have one of each dominant hand on every line for faceoffs depending on which circle they’re in) but the bottom line is if Panarin has spent his entire career playing left wing it’s better to leave him where he feels most comfortable just as you wouldn’t want to move Mikko to LW or Landy to RW. Yes they can certainly play either side but there’s a lot to be said for leaving them where they’re comfortable.

Draft cozens and sign skinner. Have no idea what to do about Barrie. If Timmins is healthy that makes Barrie more expendable.

Ooh my hot pocket is ready

I think a good option for the top 6 will be to call Bergevin and ask the price for Drouin. He’s having a hard time with the coach in MTL and there was rumors he could be available. Drouin is playing way under the projection scouts had of him when he was picked 3rd overall. Being reunited with MacK could make that superstar potential comes true… What do you guys think about Drouin as a trade target?

After watching Panarin in the playoffs I was not impressed. As mentioned, he plays ZERO defense, and he did not seem to be much of a team player. He was also weak, soft and squishy along the boards. This just supports your insightful point about being careful in the free agent market. What about big Z?? I would appreciate some brilliant information. As for Barrie-I think that he was pretty darn good this year and is a great guy, but I think that if we ever want to trade him this is the time. Salary caps make it more difficult to have players “for life” on a team. Great read AJ.

It’s a no brainer to trade Barrie. Makar is ready to take his O zone starts and PP point position. The trade value of Barrie is as high as it’ll ever get.
His defense is still stick checks; ok, but inconsistent positioning; little physicality, and not the best skating nor puck handling. He’s less of a puck handler than either Sam Girard or Cale Makar, and both are adept at skating the puck out, of our own zone. Makar is a better passer with a much higher hockey IQ than Barrie, as well.

The playoff games showed, as he was forced to take a few less O zone starts due to the young pairing, his possession numbers dropped quite significantly, and had worse CF% numbers than Cale Makar and Sam Girard. The power play was inept, as Barrie couldn’t get a shot through, as it was confirmation of his streakiness and also, how he often fails at the biggest moments against the better competition. He’s supposedly our no. 2 D man, and when no. 1 isn’t playing well, he cannot step up, and be the no. 1 guy. I had hoped to see Cale on the first PP, as it was failing, but Bednar could not make the switch, unfortunately, to replace Barrie with Makar.

I think it’s ludicrous to believe Barrie’d be worth 8 million a year, because his role would be reduced behind Makar, for sure, and perhaps others. To have him as the second or 3rd pairing and expect some good defense out of him is just not happening, and his still weak defensive play is not the best thing going forward for the Avs. He simply cannot be expected to reduce his O zone starts, increase D zone, and expect him to maintain or increase his possession numbers. Also, he would take up one more spot in the upcoming expansion draft, so in that respect, subtraction would be a gain for the overall picture.

While we may lose a bit of offense, personally, I doubt it, because Makar can take up the slack, and likely be better than Barrie offensively, with Sam and hopefully Timmins coming in for support on the PP and defensive depth. 8 million for less than your first pairing D man on a team with great young improving defensive talent makes no sense, especially when a weakness is secondary scoring, of which might be obtained in a deal for Barrie’s current high value. It was great he had a good season and didn’t devalue himself, so there should be a number of teams looking at him.

The fact Cale Makar was able to make a few starts and show how good he is was the definitive stamp to give him the opportunity to be our no. 1 PP point and D man, and also allow Sam and Timmins as puck movers to step up in place of Barrie. Cole, EJ and even Nemeth are better fits to play with the young blue liners. Barrie’s best value, for so many reasons, is in trade.

I think I appreciate Barrie more than many fans and I fear the effects of him leaving on the dressing room as it’s pretty widely known what good friends he and MacK are but you make a very persuasive argument.
