Asking for a friend
What about the season gives you hope and optimism for 2k21. My friend already knows what is cause for doubt. (Ps. This doesn’t necessarily have to include ol ? ? ? because he’s basically Schrödinger’s cat at this point)

Two Words: Courtland Sutton. Imagine how open Noah Fant, KJ Hamler and Jerry Jeudy will be when Courtland is back on the field. Look at this last game, would Courtland have dropped those game winning passes?

TLDR: A hedge is a must-have, and always should have been, but drafting a QB in the first round is an absolute no-go based on the history of first round QBs compared with Drew Lock. Keeping in mind that Drew lock is NOT a first round QB! He’s ranked 14th in QBR out of the 34 QBs drafted in the first round since 2010, and 22nd out of 34 in my own adjusted ranking scheme. Worth one more season before we give him up and watch him flourish and win multiple super bowls for Bill Belichick, in my opinion. He was a project QB when he was drafted, and giving up on a project 1 year in is not the way to succeed.
Full Comment:
With all of the talk about drafting a round 1 QB this year, I did some independent research and compared Drew Lock to all of the QBs drafted in the first round since 2010. I looked at Completion%, TD and INT %, Yards per game and average QBR. I even included Win % for those #QBWinz guys out there.
Out of 34 QBs who have been drafted in the first round, Drew ranks as follows:
27th in Completion %
19th in TD %
30th (!) in INT %
17th in Yards per Game
14th in QBR
I averaged the rankings in all categories, and out of 34 QBs in the FIRST ROUND, he ranks better than 12 of them, sitting at 22nd in average ranking across these categories. (21st if you factor in Win %, which I’m not a big fan of)
He’s firmly middle of the road, but we’re not talking about QBs drafted in the 2nd and beyond, were talking about him in comparison with only 1st round guys! He ranks above guys that franchises hung their hopes on and committed to for 25, 37, even 73 games! And we’re talking about trying to get another guy after 18 games? Keep in mind the likes of Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen (who Broncos fans would take in a heartbeat) were both well below Drew’s stats in these rankings before this season. I’m not saying he WILL make a turn around, but I’m saying calling him a bust already after barely more than 1 season worth of games, especially considering the COVID issues and multiple OCs he’d dealt with is a big mistake. He’s shown enough promise in his big games to become a Baker Mayfield / Jared Goff type QB at worst. Especially if he cleans up the INTs and Completion percentage.
So yes, bring in a hedge QB, someone like a Ryan Fitzpatrick or Nick Foles who we know are not franchise QBs or long term answers, but who can come in if Drew is struggling, or finish out a season if the Broncos decide he just can’t get there. But the idea of using a potential Top 10 pick on a QB and rolling the dice when we already have a guy who has shown the ability to light up the stadium at times and just needs some time to get used to the scheme and settle in to the NFL. We knew Drew was a project when they drafted him, that’s why he fell to the 2nd round. Giving up on a project after 18 games under these circumstances is crazy.
Thanks for all you guys do, hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year!

Love to hear your breakdowns of Fant’s/Risner’s 2nd seasons.

Let’s talk Bausby. All season the cutting of Bausby was portrayed as gross incompetence by the coaching staff. Then huge I told you so when he was re-signed. And when he finally gets his chance to be a full time starter. He’s a liability and gets benched for a guy with no experience in Vic’s system. Was his performance on Sunday an outlier? Or were the coaches right all along?

Well when you read this, it’ll be 2021 in Aus. So happy new year to you all.
Take us through your thoughts on this;
Assume broncos finish at 8 in draft order.
Free Agency;
Save;
1. Release or significantly restructure Casey
2. Release Bouye
3. Renew and restructure Von
Spend;
1. Sign Justin Simmons – for what? $15m?
2. Sign Shelby Harris – for what? $8m?
3. 2nd round tender Phil
4. Sign Alexander Johnson – for what?
5. 2nd rounder tender Patrick
Draft
1. Surtain / Farley with first round pick
2. RT second round
3. BPA
How do you feel? Is this possible?
Thanks for the year lads. Was a hell of a ride. I am excited for 2021. There will be plenty of discussion on Drew – we’ve got months to tackle it….
Happy NY to you guys.

Mase, we finally got to see Trask without Pitts, so we can evaluate…. Then the rest of the team opted out too. UGH. As hard to evaluate as Drew this year. Senior Bowl I guess.
How funny would it be if Jason Garrett comes up with a game plan to beat the Cowboys and eliminate them from the playoffs? Hope so, for our draft position.
Really enjoyed all you guys do and so looking forward to a much better 2021. And also great appreciation for all the members comments. Great to think through what the team can do and ideas to make us great again. Go DNVR and Go the Broncos!!! (Just not this week).

I’m sure you guys have had to do this before, but can you explain how the tenders (like 2nd round tenders) work a bit more i.e. who’s eligible, when, is it a new contract or an extension?
Also, Cody at Locked on Broncos just had a former QB Tim Jenkins on his show and Tim broke down Drew’s play and even whether Drew would be back. It was a great listen and I found his insight valuable and informative. It definitely made me think a little more that Lock has a good chance of and making strides and being a solid starting QB next year. One thing he specifically discussed that I liked was whether some plays like the y-spot are supposed to be read top-down or bottom-up. He said if it’s bottom-up which he’s assuming it is based on how Drew is reading it, then Drew is making the correct reads. But if it’s supposed to be top-down, Shurmur would be having to tell Drew over and over it’s wrong and that would be a big reason to not bring him back.

MY BOYS! I am not sure if there will be a podcast episode recorded on New Year’s Day, so I am wishing you each, the DNVRMY Fam, and the Broncos a much better year in 2021. Sunday’s game against the Raiders is a success if (1) ___, (2) ___, and (3) ___ transpire. Have a terrific Thursday and safe New Year’s Eve! DNVRMY SALUTE!

The broncos would be crazy not to tender Phil or resign Simmons. Not to brag or anything, but Phil is having a crazy good season…. in the PS Madden league!! Just got X-Factor this past week! Simmons got it 3 weeks ago too! You cant be X-Factor in Madden and not be a game changer!! And clearly Madden leagues are just like the NFL everybody knows that! We by the way are just a few slots away from being completely full would love to have a new face or two in the league twitter handle is @ZJCastro_94 or email zachjcastro@me.com

Been a while since commenting but listen everyday and enjoy all your podcasts and articles. First, shout out to World Of Suck, I enjoy our weekly debates in discord chat. Question: Do you think if the Broncos got Stafford or an instant starter do you think they hang on to Lock as a very capable affordable backup with the opportunity to grow and learn behind someone? Especially since Stafford does have some injury history. hope you all have a safe and happy new year.

Not sure the Broncos aren’t in love with Simmons. They had the franchise tag at their disposal and they used it. They already had big money tied up in the secondary with Kareem, Bouye, and Callahan. That is a big portion of their budget on one position group. Maybe they knew they wouldn’t be keeping all four in 2021 and they could then give Simmons the money. Just a thought
