What’s up gentleman! You hit the nail on the head talking about this being the correct formula for Drew Lock. He looked great after the first pick. My question is (because I’m not still not either sold or out on Lock) do you think it’s worrisome that this is the formula by running the ball so much and him throwing off play action and that he won’t be able to go out there if this game plan doesn’t work and make plays? Basically is this formula just handicapping the Broncos offense from being truly explosive/successful or just a stepping stone to getting him comfortable and becoming a better NFL QB?
MavBronco
It’s a stepping stone. Lock and shurmur trusting each other and the offense winning in the short game will let the explosive plays develop. Let some confidence build and let everyone gel together and reap the benefits in the long term
MavBronco
Howdy gents,
Hoping you’re right that the team can get another win or two and keep Fangio and co. to keep the young guys progressing. There will be enough roster churning with the projected cap falling next season. My question for you is how catastrophic would it be if Munchak took an OC/ head coaching gif next season? Worries me about the cohesion and development of bolles, Risner, Cush, Glasgow, and the turnstile of RT.
Ps: the oline is going to have to earn their keep this weekend against the stingy Saints’ front seven.

Fellas,
I’ve been burned by this feeling too many times over the past few years. The Broncos have a great game plan and execute it to victory. Everybody feels like they have turned the corner. Then the very next week it’s back to old same plays that have never worked. Please give me confidence that Shurmur will see the results from this and keep this train rolling. What is is about NFL coaches that they overthink every little detail. Just keep.it.simple.stupid.
Garett Bolles
Sheesh I was bulldozing these chumps on Sunday.
Anyways, before the game, Matt Miller reported according to a scouting source, is that the Broncos aren’t set on Lock and “…knows that if he doesn’t show improvement this year, it has to be open to selecting a first-rounder at the position if it is able to add an elite prospect.”
My question is:
What does Lock have to do for this not to be the case and you’re confident Lock is the 2021 starter? What does he do where this is going to be the case?
Hawkeye bronco
Fellas! While it was enjoyable watching a Broncos win and seeing drew make progress on Sunday, I’m worried this team might just be playing itself into the middle tier of the nfl. If that plays out and Denver has a pick around 12-18 in the draft, what position do they target, if it’s not QB? Going into the season LT was the obvious need, but if they resign Bolles what do you think is the biggest need to address? DLine/edge rusher is what I see at this point.
Thanks for the great pod! Go Broncos and go DNVR.

After another elite game by Justin Simmons I started thinking about when he might get extended. Then I remembered we still don’t even know what the cap number is going to be. Do you expect to see any extensions coming during the season given the uncertainty? It’s looking like Bolles and Simmons are getting expensive.

My Boys! whats up on this wonderful Tuesday! I wanted to start off this comment by going back to Friday. In-and-Out is not worth the hype. My girlfriends family loves it and when I finally made it down to Utah to try it, the burgers and fries tasted like a cheaper version of McDonalds. The only thing I would go there again for was the milkshake… and I mean how hard is it really to make a milkshake. I hope In-and-Out doesn’t expand to Wyoming and we instead get some more Chick-fil-A’s or another good restaurant.
Now I will get to the broncos looking forward. Particularly to the game against the bills. There has been alot of people saying that this game will depend on Josh Allen’s play. I completely disagree, Broncos are going to win and sweep the AFC East and prove that now that the patriots dynasty is over, it will be the Denver broncos who own the East! Have a great day and Go broncos!

hey guys!
after seeing the rams’ defense last night, brandon staley is clearly on the fast track to being a head coach. been a good week for vic. first his defense confuses the hell out of tua and then his protégé shuts down brady and all those weapons.
i know a large part of it is that vic is the playcaller here and also it’s considered poor taste to deny your assistant coaches the opportunity to advance their caeers but vic isn’t going to coach forever. if you have a young talent like that on your coaching staff, why would you not try harder to retain it?
the broncos already did something similar when they promoted joe woods in 2017 in part because they viewed him as a rising star in the league (which has largely proven to be right). if they thought staley had a future as an eventual head coach, do y’all think they should’ve done more to keep him in the building?

Hi Y’all:
Thanks for keeping me sane during this rough season. I heard a rumor that the reason we couldn’t sign Simmons because of a cash on-hand problem caused by not having a proper owners. Also, heard the NFL will force a sale by fining the Broncos 10 million every year they don’t have an owner. Anything to either of these? BTW, I still believe it was a negative false positive and Lock will put it together.

Is there something to be said for Lock not trying to win the game on every throw?
His success percentage throwing 30 yds downfield on every drop back is equivalent to Mr Miyagi catching flies with his chopsticks and a punt. On the flip side, taking a profit wether it was 2yds to Phil or a quick screen for 4yds turned the offense into a working machine.

MY BOYS! You got me! I had been thinking of joining DNVR for a while now and finally did on Sunday after the Broncos sealed the win. Just wanted to be able to leave a comment on the post game pod to be able to talk about it with everyone else throughout the year. I have listened to the pod since last years training camp and its great so I’m looking forward to getting to read your articles and other content you guys have now that I’m a member. I listen to the Avs pod also and its great as well. Question about Sundays game. Do you guys think that when Brian Flores decided to pull Tua, the only thought going thru his mind was “SCREW THIS”? Thanks for the great coverage.

Hey guys! Lately we’ve been falling into this trap where we want to compare a young emerging guy to transcendent players and their trajectory. We’ve had this discussion with Drew Lock because he’s in the same conference as Pat Mahomes, and it’s disappointing because Drew is not living up to that standard. While this season is unveiling some of his warts, like how he struggles to read defenses and step up in the pocket, we’re also seeing growth such as when he’s looking off safeties and showing toughness in the face of adversity. Broncos Country is spoiled after watching Manning and Elway lead our team to 7 Super Bowls, and there’s a steep dropoff to the next tier of QB’s where Jake Plummer and Brian Griese reside. However, Lock is a naturally gifted athlete with a good work ethic and a great attitude.
I did some digging to find other quarterbacks within the past 15 years who had faced adversity their first two years in the league before making it work, guys who had complementary skill sets to Lock, and this is what I came up with: Eli Manning, Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck and Derek Carr. Over their first two seasons they averaged 26 starts, a 56.8% completion rate, 221 passing yds per game, and a QB Rating of 77.4. Compare that to Drew Lock who is on pace to make 21 starts and through 12 games is averaging 58.7% completion rate, 214 passing yds per game and a 75.7 QB rating. So, would you be happy with Lock if he ended up in this tier of quarterbacks and is he capable of reaching it?

My Folks,
I don’t find myself waxing poetic about quarterback play. In my mind, it’s the low hanging fruit of the game of football. Myriad other nuances ignite the bubbles in my cauldron with far greater intensity: A free kick. A Pancake block. A stunt. A successful draw or the sideline pouting of an aging star as the tides of an undefeated Father Time wash over him like a foreordained torrent of immutable irony. And, of course, the pure unapologetic bounce of a beautifully placed coffin-corner kick.
What is something that you have a penchant for that your group of peers does not ? This need not be football related.

Hey boys! Been a quick minute since I’ve commented, but still an avid listener!
Just a comment out of left field to give poor Drew a break from all our scrutiny…
Did anyone else watch Vic’s press conference yesterday and see his disgust when Klis couldn’t unmute his mic?! MUUUTTTTEEEEDDDDD!
I literally made me laugh out loud.
I’d love to hear a perspective on this from y’all who are a part of those conferences as I think it was hilarious, and couldn’t have happened to a better guy.
Cheers!

MY BOYS! Before we turn the page on Week 11, I’d like to give a little more praise to the offensive linemen for their work on Sunday in pass protection and the run game. Surrendering zero sacks and gashing Miami’s defense for almost 200 yards is no small feat, especially for how the Broncos’ OL and Dolphins DL were trending prior to the game. I really enjoyed Vic Fangio’s remarks yesterday about how the Broncos utilized runs from the Green Bay Packers’ 1960s playbook to counteract what Miami does upfront. The run calls also reminded me of the University of Oklahoma in the 2018 Rose Bowl and the Joe Gibbs Washington teams of the 1980s and early 1990s. The Broncos seem to be at their best, even before Sunday, when they have their linemen pull. The counter and power runs were potent. Watching Garett Bolles, Dalton Risner, Lloyd Cushenberry III, Graham Glasgow, and Austin Scholttmann pull and get out in space was a thing of beauty. Obviously, this is now on tape for other teams to game plan against, but so was what the Broncos did as far as heavy dosages of the same runs during the Mike Shanahan Era. Is the pull game and play action off of it here to stay? I hope it is, because I think this team has found an offensive identity in doing so. Have a terrific Tuesday. DNVRMY SALUTE!

Hey guys,
To clarify my poor attempt to provide some humor in my comment yesterday:
The announcers were probably mispronouncing the dolphins RB Ahmed all day as Achmed.
Just made me think of the ventriloquist comedian and Jeff Dunham and that’s the name of one of his most popular puppets.
Thanks for still reading the comment, and all your great coverage!
Don’t need to read:
Here’s a link for a clip if interested. Tried to use the memorable line yesterday and didn’t connect.

My boys! Curious…what is a day in the life of a DNVR employee like? Would be interesting to here what each of yours are like individually. Getting paid to talk Broncos & hangout in a sports bar seems like the dream. I’m low key jealous. Okay, I lied I’m high key jealous. Haha
Like everyone else here, I’m glad we got the W and saw Drew’s play stabilize after the first pick, but I’ve really been left to wonder why Pat Shurmur was the pick to be the new OC. I understand that coming out of college, the idea was that Lock was a spread quarterback who would thrive in a college type offense, but after last season it was very clear that at this point he’s his best playing in a run/play action oriented offense that capitalizes on his physical skills by allowing him to run bootlegs, designed rollouts, and take deep shots off play action with his massive arm.
With that, what made Fangio think Shurmur was the right fit for Lock? Yes, I understand that he’s a veteran coach but the Shurmur hire feels as though he was picked based on Drew’s college tape and NOT based on the evaluation of his rookie season. Even if Fangio did want to change coordinators, why not bring in someone who runs the McVay/Shannahan/LaFleur style offense? It’s become very clear that that’s the style of football that suits our quarterback, compliments our defense, and frankly has been the offensive identity of this franchise since the 1990s. The more and more I think about it, the more I wonder if the Shurmur hire has less to do with Lock and more to do with a falling out or issue between Scangarello and Fangio and Fangio opting to replace him with someone more “his speed” regardless of the scheme fit.
I hope Pat Shurmur can adjust his play design to fit with what Drew has done well, but at the same time it would pain me to see Shurmur outside his element as a playcaller. I’d hate to change coordinators AGAIN, but I can’t help but wonder if pairing Drew with a guy like Mike LaFleur, Mike McDaniel, Kevin O’Connell, etc. could pay dividends, especially if we have a young HC in waiting to replace as our OC to eventually replace Fangio.
