How many tweets would it take to put this on Twitter where a bunch of dumbasses could read it?

I suppose I could just make it free to read so there’s no excuse for people not to give it a whirl

Great read, AJ. I was all “HELL NO” before this. Now it at least has me thinking it over. I think I would still rather have Petrangelo on the back end to really step up our defensive core, but I can see where Hall could be alluring given a short term deal.

My impression is that Taylor Hall is another Matt Duchene. He might have an inflated sense of his hockey value and an ego that insists he must be deemed the best player on the team. Hall, like Duchene, is a good player — and on occasion, a very good player. But neither Hall or Duchene are consistently great players, perennial locks for All-Star teams or seem already destined for the HOF.

I wonder if Hall would avoid the Avalanche because the 65+ points he might get playing among MacK, Landy, Rants, Kadri, and Burky would decrease his sense of self-worth and marketing value for the subsequent UFA. Yeah, he did great, but look at who his linemates were…sorta like the knocks against hitters playing at Coors Field.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you say the magic number is three. There’s just no way they can take another big contract for longer than that without sacrificing someone none of us want to see gone. As far as impact the only other high level/ high dollar guy short of a goalie (which is a different discussion imo) I’d rather see is pietrangelo and given what I’ve read about what he wants, I don’t see him taking a short term contact.

This is the first I’ve heard about hall being open to less term. If that’s truly the case then I think the avs could do a lot worse than take a shot on him.

Also, there were a lot of warning flags surrounding kadri and his temper/attitude as well, even though a lot of folks said he’d gotten his head right. I’d say that has worked out pretty well so far. Dallas did their best to goad him and it didn’t work.

Good stuff AJ, as a long time anti-haller I have really come around since the pandemic and flat cap.. I am not a fan of UFA contracts as they tend to be overpayments, but in this case I think you are correct, if they can get a great player for a shorter term and less money then they would have originally thought they almost have to do it, or at least try to do it. As for Hall, in what scenario would he not want to sign a 3 year deal with the avs and have about as legit chance at a cup as anywhere in the league.. it really is a win win for both sides.

Still not in favor of Hall coming here, but your article defends the move well. If he does, I will take some fries with my crow.

I was strongly against this until reports started coming out a few days ago about him being willing to take a short term deal to chase a Cup. This just makes too much sense now. If he is willing to take 2-3 years at $8-9 mil then absolutely have that offer drawn up and presented to him the instant the free agent market opens up. As for the other concerns brought up both in the article and in the comments, having a legitimate chance to win a Cup does amazing things to egos. We have seen many star players over the years in most every sport check their well earned egos at the door if they feel like this is finally their best chance to win for the first time in their long careers. Pietrangelo already has a Cup, he’s going to want term and money that I don’t think the Avs are willing to commit to in the big long term view of this Cup window we’re in now.

Nailed it! I wasn’t big on the idea of Hall coming to the Avs until the last couple months with the flat cap & everything. It seems like a perfect situation now to add Hall & go chasing some Cups! Reminds me of the good old days when we would go after all the big name free agents like Fleury, Bourque, Blake, Selanne/Kariya, etc. It didn’t always work out, but it sure was fun to be in contention for those years!

Whatever happens, I trust in Sakic to make the right call.

Nope, Cost would be too high for an overrated player. He’s heading for his fourth team in his career which means the teams that had him didn’t think he was worth it.

I’m all for not believing Hall is worth it but this is a terrible means of evaluating Hall as a player. Edmonton moved Hall because they wanted to turn the locker room over to McDavid and needed defense. They made a bad deal, too. New Jersey only moved Hall because he was going to leave in free agency and they wanted to get SOMETHING for him before he left for nothing…which is what’s about to happen to Arizona after they made their all-in playoff push. Every single one of those teams would be better with Hall than without and even they would tell you that. The player has the power when UFA becomes a reality, though, and he didn’t want to play for two franchises that are rebuilding/rebooting/not competing. Pinning that on him is absurd.

Thanks AJ. Good stuff. Also of course we have this phenomenon of players coming to the Avs and having record years. Burky and PEB for sure, Donskoi, Kadri and Calvert were all on record pace last year before injuries and/or Covid interfered. Hall would get the compound impact of that phenomenon plus the MacK/Miko partnership. So the trade off, as you have explained, is roughly $1 mio less for a year, BUT have a career year and compete for a cup for the first (only?) time in your life. And if it doesn’t work you will likely make back the $1 mio in your next contract based on production increase with the Avs. Nothing is assured, but that’s sort of a $$$ neutral ( on a present value basis) high quality swing at winning the cup. No brainer to me.

I was honestly against Hall before reading this article and seeing his comments the last couple of weeks about taking a short term deal. My gut feeling tho is that we have a ton of offense and spending that much money to get more might not be the best choice. We lost to Dallas because we couldn’t keep the puck out of our own net (on top of the worst injury luck in the history of ever). Now I’m not saying we need to go after one of the obviously past-it goalies in UFA, but I would think we could spend that $8-9 mil on a PK forward and/or a defensive defenseman, as those seem to be our bigger areas of need. The team as it sits now can (and likely will) score a ton of goals, so I’m not denying that Hall would def work for us but I think there are other areas of the team to address before adding even more offense. Sorry for the novel, I’m a little bored at work lol
