Colorado keeps it going in Seattle

The Colorado Rockies got off to a good start in Seattle by comfortably taking their first game against the Mariners by a score of 8-4.

For the third time in a row, Antonio Senzatela pitched very well but couldn’t quite manage that totally dominant start, allowing a couple of earned runs over six innings pitched.

He gave up an early unearned one on another strange play from Trevor Story at short but that lead for the home club was short-lived.

The bottom of the order took the lead right back for the Rockies. Chris Owings started off the top of the third with a soft single and move up to third on a double down the left-field line off the bat of Elia Diaz.

Diaz, in his first action of the season, hit the ball over 103 MPH in three at-bats

A pair of groundballs from Garrett Hampson and Story, after his error, put Colorado ahead 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Rockies added two more.

Charlie Blackmon singled through the shift for his second hit in the game, raising his batting average on the season to .412. After a flyout from Nolan Arenado a two-out rally ensued. Matt Kemp came up with a double on a tough pitch out away from him, but he went with it and hit it down the right-field line for the two-bagger.

With runners at second and third and two outs, Daniel Murphy came up with another huge clutch hit for his club and sent a ground ball right back up the middle for a two-run single, extending the Rockies lead to 4-1.

They weren’t done yet, though, adding another run in the seventh after Seattle was finally able to tag Senzatela for a two-run homer. Hampson responded with a solo shot of his own, though, making the most of his first start of the season in the leadoff spot.

The Rockies purchased some insurance in the eighth with a pair of home runs from the hot-hitting duo of Blackmon and Murphy. It was Blackmon’s third hit in the game and third homer of the season. He has 22 hits in his last 44 at-bats.

Murphy ended the game with four RBI and is now hitting .342 on the year.

Tyler Kinley pitched a dominant seventh before the Mariners managed to scratch out a run against Daniel Bard in the eighth but he mostly pitched well. Carlos Estevez allowed a couple of base runners in the ninth but didn’t let things get too tense, closing it out without allowing a run.

With the win, the Rockies improve to 10-3 on the season.
