Makar was on a 82 game pace of 17 – 55 -72. As a rookie. Before the first injury he was on a point per game / Norris finalist pace. He had a ramp-up coming back from both of those injuries which slowed him down a bit. If I were the Avs I would offer that kid whatever it takes to sew him up for the 8 years after next season. As crazy as it may seem to some, pretty much whatever they choose to pay him will likely end up being a bargain over the course of his contract. Before the season 50 points seemed like the edge of what he could reasonably hit (I thought he would get 55 but I was really bullish on him) and he might have had 60 even with the injuries if the last 12 games had been played.

He’s truly generational and he’s more – maybe much more – than even we had hoped. I think you go the D version of McDavid with him. If that means 9.5 or 10 x 8, so be it. Just like the McDavid and Ovechkin contracts, he’s so good that you just wipe money discussions off the table and let him do his thing for the next 9 seasons. I honestly think we’re outside of the realm of “what if he tails off for a year or two” with Makar just like with McDavid or Ovie when they were given seemingly crazy contracts. He’s just too elite for that to happen.
