Just a week after announcing that they would suspend all operations for 30 days to adjust to the ever-evolving COVID-19 crisis, Major League Rugby announced on Thursday morning that it would cancel the remainder of the 2020 season.
The decision comes after safety requirements set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) limited almost all the possibilities of playing a shortened season. That, combined with the uncertainty of when the crisis will end, ultimately led to the decision to pick up the pieces in 2021.
Despite cancelling the remainder of the 2020 matches, MLR also announced on Thursday that it will continue forward with their MLR 2020: Virtual campaign. The campaign will consist of player representatives from MLR teams competing against each other via Rugby20 on the PlayStation 4.
The matches are scheduled to start on Friday, March 20 at 5 PM MT and will be broadcast on Twitch.TV/MajorLeagueRugby.
