Good stuff as usual AJ. What’s amazing about Newhook is how now you really notice his speed and skating. Just goes to show you, it’s hard to play at top speed when you don’t know what you’re doing. Now that he is more comfortable, you are seeing that skating ability that is part of his reputation.

AJ, totally agree that if Mikko and Burky became the consistently dominant players they could be, it would be really scary. Totally groaned on Burky’s turnovers, the first at the defensive blue line before he scored his first and then the first goal against. The cute passes drive me crazy when they go the other direction.

Rantanen has completely fallen in love with the cute stuff. Gone are him bombing away one-timers on the PP in place of him trying to make those cute little chips at the side of the net or making a sneaky pass to the bumper spot. Gone are him utilizing his massive frame and overpowering defenders and sniping a corner with a wicked wrister in place of him getting pushed to the outside so he can try a low-percentage backhand (his is elite, mind you, but just isn’t as good of a scoring chance all things considered). He regularly tries cute little backhand chips up the boards to clear the defensive zone and a decent amount of them fail to clear. I have a hard time believing the coaching staff loves this but there’s been so little change in his game this year that I don’t know if they mind it.

His skating not being a weapon in the playoffs last year was probably the most jarring part of going from watching him at every other level to his NHL debut. He just didn’t look like himself. That continued at the start of this year. Now after his recall, he looks totally different, like a guy who is really understanding of his path to success.
