I honestly don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Needed a goalie. If he stays healthy, he’s a top end goalie in the league. You’re going for the cup, picks and prospects are expendable. Didn’t give away any top prospects and the picks we gave away could turn into absolutely nothing. Worth the risk. Let’s hope for good health for Kuemper.

Good list of pros and cons AJ and I think balls on the table is a great description of this trade. If Kuemper can produce in the playoffs then the value given up will be totally worth it. Whilst I rated Grubauer, I really feel that he lacked a little bit in the big postseason moments. I get the feeling Kuemper has that extra capacity to raise his game when the Avs have an off night (as they’ve tended to do) and bail them out. This is one trait the Avs can never seem to eliminate from their personality as a team and maybe Kuemper is the answer.

Hard to say, injury wise… Varly, an older guy, came down with a long term injury… and so did Francouz, a younger guy…
Has Kuemper been out with the same severity of injury as Varly or Frankie?…
Varly has been way better since he had his operation, and I think we need to give Frankie the same benefit of the doubt if he had basically the same problem and operation as Varly.

And maybe if Bednar goes a little easier and lets Frankie give Kuemper some rest time it will work out, plus Kuemper not being as stressed out with a better defense in front of him…

As for Grube already having a ring, was he the starter at that time?
I was disappointed with Grube in Vegas, although at the same time the Avs were simply out-muscled in general in my mind.

Questions: how much is Darcy costing?
What do the Avs have left in cap space now?
Any chance Saad stays for another year?

Sakic had to make a move to fill the hole that Grub’s departure left. Really it is all just VooDoo, just a question of good or bad VooDoo.
Hope it is the good kind of VooDoo.

Anyone bummed about Grub leaving just needs to rewatch the highlight of the first goal against the Avs in game six against Vegas. Took the wind right out of the team’s sail.

Avs got into a situationship
-Close to last team without a goalie
-Took the last guy available and had to pay up for that
-last few years…Gru games played 113, Kuemp 111 that’s a wash
-Being last one at the dance staring at the last person without a partner means that’s your option
-What else could they have done than this…not much
-Kuempers at $4.5 (PHX paying $1m)…if things go well…he’ll want a raise which is getting into $5+, Gru signed at $5.9 so a heavy heavy price to pay to possibly arrive at the same salary ballpark
-Only thing is the age, maybe Kuemper wouldn’t want 6yrs
-I think we waited too long, watched Gru leave, watched all other goalies sign and here we are
-Strategic option includes: find a cheaper ($3m) young good up and coming goalie in next years crop of goalies for the 3×3 and let that play out, buying time for Annunen and hope one of those 2 pan out or
-Kuemper does great, signs a $5.75m for 2yrs maybe swallow on 3yrs then reevaluate Annunen along that period

I don’t like the price. I think Joe made a mistake in not signing a free agent. A lot of goalies will look good with our team

As I wrote in another post, I think the other pieces to this puzzle are three-fold; 1) Signing Grubi for six years at $6M uses up cap space we will need to extend and pay Nate. 2) Having Kuemper for a year, possibly two, at $3.5M and $5M cap hit each year, tees-up Justus Anunen, our potential stud to become our number one goaltender starting for the 2023/2024 season after he continues to adapt to the North American game with the Eagles. 3) Keeping the core intact (Nate, Mikko, Lande, Cale, Sammy and possibly Josty) for the next 6-7 years gives us the shot to do what Chicago did in winning three Cups during their six year span…and to have that opportunity by keeping this highly talented core together is the very best one can hope for in the salary cap era.
