Do you find it particularly odd,
That a backer called Justin Strnad,
And his friend Ojemudia,
Are ready to do to ya,
On-field things to prove your team’s flawed?

If neither Drew Lock or Steady Teddy run away with the QB competition, does that imply their ceilings are pretty similar for this year? I’ll start getting nervous if mid way thru training camp it’s not abundantly clear who is the better quarterback. We know Teddy’s ceiling, and if Drew is not the clear favorite soon, our QB room is average at best. Average seems like a death sentence to mediocracy, and I could see the front office being content with average QB play for years. If Teddy comes in and wins 9-10 games, will the front office still be looking to upgrade the QB room next year? Or would that take us out of the hunt for an elite QB? My hunch is Teddy wins the competition, puts 9-10 wins on the board, and the Broncos run back at that level for the next 5 years. I appreciate y’alls thoughts!

Feel free to just lie to me, and tell me we got Aaron Rogers and are gonna be competing for it all every year for the next 5 haha.

If the Broncos get lower-mid-tier QB play, roughly in the 18-to-24 range among starters — and it matters not whether it comes from Bridgewater or Lock — a smart front office would respond the way Buffalo’s top brass did after going 9-7 in 2017 with a middling Tyrod Taylor. The Bills let Taylor walk in free agency and put all their resources behind getting Josh Allen and developing him. The Jaguars went 10-6 in that 2017 season with Blake Bortles having a similar season to Taylor. Jacksonville gave Bortles a 2-year extension. If the Broncos go 10-7 or 11-6 and sneak into the playoffs with middling QB play, I would hope that they would not be fooled and would proceed as Buffalo did: Identify a QB in next year’s class and do whatever it takes to get him, even if it means sacrificing future draft capital. But my fear is that the Broncos will double down on the mid-tier guy and hope he can become something more. As I’ve said on the pod a few times, the biggest mistake a team can make at QB is to pay a mid-tier QB big money. Give elite money if you have an elite QB; otherwise you’re better served going into the Round 1 pool for your cost-controlled (drink!) option.

My boys! I’m catching up on pods and had to disagree with one thing Mase said on the Tuesday pod. First off, Mase is much more intelligent football mind then I, but I disagreed with the notion of being “no chance” this defense comes close to 2015, I know that defense is all time, but you said you’d take Von 6 years ago from Von today, but Von today isn’t Von from 6 years ago in this comparison, it’s D.Ware. Von can definitely do what Ware did in 2015 this year! The real question is Chubb! If his gonna live up to his draft expectations, it’s time to take over the league, if he does that this year, it could easily be close with the depth in the secondary, and Dre‘mont Jones taking a HUGE step (which I believe he will). It’s closer then I feel like we discussed, but a lot of things did go that Defenses way, so maybe it won’t be. But this D is crazy this year as well. Sorry for the rant, thanks for reading! I’ve all about NBA playoffs right now, but I’m still listening to my DNVR crew!

I get where you’re coming from. But Chubb has yet to prove that he is a pass rusher in the class of Miller during his prime years. He’s a very good player, but he is not on track to reach a Hall of Fame trajectory yet. Miller’s per-16-game averages through 3 seasons were 12 sacks and 22.4 TFL; Chubb’s are 9.7 and 13.2, respectively. Chubb had the ACL injury in year 2; Miller had his ACL injury in Year 3 (a year in which he also served a 6-game suspension). I know this will come across as nit-picking, but Chubb appears to be on a course that has him a tier below Miller, just as the top 2 cornerbacks are a notch below peak-level Talib and CHJr. The 2015 defense had peak Miller, peak Talib and — in the playoffs — peak D-Ware. Three likely HoFers at the height of their powers. I don’t think it’s fair or realistic to expect the 2021 defense to match the 2015 unit’s excellence.

I try to be as positive as possible but I can’t stop thinking about this scary scenario where we can’t land Rodgers or Watson and the QB’s we have now end up flopping next year. On top of that, after passing on Fields if he turns out to be a franchise QB then it will just be rubbing salt in the wound. I have faith in Teddy and Drew but I’m not completely confident in them long term. I hope they prove me wrong but what do you think the Broncos would do at QB if we are unable to find a franchise QB in the next year? I would say draft one but with our defense I don’t believe that we will have a top 10 pick. Thanks for your thoughts guys and I hope you all have a great day!

Fellas,

If Rodgers comes to Denver I fully expect him to throw more Hail Mary’s with the thin mile high air. Rodgers to Sutton for the game winner from the 30? Don’t mind if I do!

How say you?

There once was a QB named Lock
Whose inconsistencies gave Broncos fans a shock
For every touchdown reception
There seemed a couple interceptions
Perhaps he was hindered by the size of his cock.

For all the Lock/Bridgewater talk, I’m wondering how Rypien is looking this year. I liked what he did last year when he played. Any chance he could compete for the #1 or #2 spot this year?

I saw Mase like a tweet raising concerns about Vic’s comments that they’re only 2 or 3% into deciding the QB. Vic’s comment didn’t set off red flags for me at first but it doesn’t seem great now that I think about it. What are your guys’ thoughts?

Hey dudes. I’m curious to know how monetary incentives work in regards to the salary cap. For example, in 2015 when Manning took a cut, but received it back in incentives from winning the Super Bowl (the details evade my memory but I think it was at least something along those lines) where did that money come from? Was it set aside for the season? Taken from the 2016 cap? Any insight?

Thanks!

hey guys!

just wanted to ask y’all about some george paton comments from last week that are flying under the radar;

he was asked about courtland sutton and this quote in particular stood out. he said ‘Courtland Sutton, I mean, I’ve never seen someone work so hard in rehab’.

keep in mind that paton has been a high flying nfl exec for nearly 20 years and more importantly oversaw adrian peterson work his way back from a torn ACL and MCL in 8 months and go on to win the MVP that year.

we’ve been talking for a while about how fond paton is of sutton but it’s getting to the point where i’d be shocked if he doesn’t sign sutton up long term, regardless of how much it costs. what do y’all think?

I understand he didn’t really play in games year one, but its year three and it’s clear he still struggles past his first read. He’s in the same offense, is not a rookie, has great targets, and still struggles past read 1. My question is how improvable is mental processing for Lock? Reports are coming out from Patriots camp that Mac Jones is crushing it in terms of picking up the offense and handling lots of information. Does this become a question of intelligence and static traits? Some people just don’t have the ability to process complex information quickly. You can’t just tell your employee to “get smarter”. Maybe Lock just doesn’t have the mind to be a NFL starter no matter how hard he studies. For example, I’m never going to be an astrophysicist no matter how hard i study.
