The List: The fit between Michael Porter Jr. and JaMychal Green

1. One of the things that the Denver Nuggets can do to improve their flow in the half court is to improve their timing on secondary reads. In the clip below, Jamal Murray reacts slowly to a backdoor cut that could’ve segued perfectly into a dribble handoff with Nikola Jokic. Instead, he allows the defense to reset before walking into the handoff.

It’s Jokic and Murray so the two score anyway but this provides a great example of how Denver often becomes disjointed between their first reads and their secondary reads.

2. The Nuggets most common baseline inbound play features Murray tossing the ball to Jokic before running into an immediate handoff for a pull-up jumper. They’ve been running this play for at least 3 seasons but against the Phoenix Suns they mixed things up and inverted the play, having Jokic run off of Murray for the handoff. Of course the play worked.

3. Michael Porter is so long.

4. But he’s not very strong.

5. Like Jerami Grant, JaMychal Green can effectively bounce between the dunker spot and the corner. Which is one of many reasons that he is such a great fit alongside Porter Jr. in the front court.

6. The Nuggets have gotten a lot of traction out of simple double drag screens with porter and Green. Both guys can roll or pop on this play which allows for a lot of different reads and results.

7. PJ Dozier would be a starting caliber player if he cut plays like this out of his rotation.

8. Facundo Campazzo is my favorite Nuggets player to watch on the defensive end. He does so many things right and puts effort into every second of possession.

9. Speaking of good rotations, here is Will Barton executing one of the key rotations that keep Denver’s defense afloat in the PnR.

10. These full court passes won’t end up on the end of season highlight reel since they didn’t result in a bucket but they are absolutely incredible in their accuracy.
