Another veteran defender leaves CSU football

Devin Phillips has left the Colorado State football team. Multiple sources confirmed to DNVR that the fifth-year senior quit the team on Tuesday. 

Phillips entered the season as the No. 1 defensive tackle on the depth chart but missed the Michigan game due to a violation of team rules. He had played in each of the four games since the season opener, however, the veteran saw very limited action in the win over Nevada and finished with just one tackle in the game. 

Since he did not play versus the Wolverines, Phillips technically could retain his final year of eligibility by sitting out the rest of the season. 

He’ll leave CSU with 34 solo tackles (101 total), 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks in his career. 

Phillips joins a long list of veteran players that have left the football program since the season started in August. 

Junior safety Henry Blackburn recently commented on the situation, telling reporters that they don’t want any players on the team with one foot in, one foot out. Jay Norvell also talked about the situation, stating that there have been a lot of selfish individuals with agendas outside of the best interests of the team. 

With Phillips no longer in the team, the Rams should have more opportunities for Grady Kelly, James Mitchell and Cam Bariteau.
