DENVER — Colorado State Football picked up a late commitment for the 2022 recruiting cycle over the weekend.

Rex Haynes, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound wide receiver from San Diego, Calif., pledged his allegiance to the Green & Gold with a tweet on Monday afternoon. Haynes’ tweet came one day after CSU wide receivers coach Chad Savage posted about the WR room getting better due to a big-time addition out of San Diego.

The offers listed for Haynes on 247Sports include Arizona State, Fresno State and San Diego State. Haynes also posted about an offer from Cal Poly, as well as interest from Oregon State and UNLV, though.

According to Max Preps, in 12 games played this past season, Haynes recorded 26 receptions for 589 receiving yards and six touchdowns. And in 22 career games Haynes has averaged 25.1 yards per reception, 44.7 receiving yards per game, and he has 11 touchdown receptions to his name.

Haynes also returned kicks and played free safety at the prep level but he definitely appears to be a really solid fit for the Air Raid at wide receiver. Diving into his Hudl film, it seemed like every play was him going for 30 or more yards. On a couple of occasions he even went for 60-plus yards.

Now, obviously you have to take highlight films with a grain of salt because they only show the best moments. Having said that, though, it definitely backed up what the numbers say and that’s that he is the type of guy that can really stretch the field. What was particularly encouraging was that he demonstrated the ability to create separation and beat corners over the top, but he is also able to produce yards after the catch. Haynes is shifty in the open field and he’s able to evade defenders without losing much speed.

Assuming Haynes does in fact sign with the Rams, he will be the fourth high school receiver from California and eighth total wide-out CSU is adding to the mix for 2022. It will be interesting to see how many of the young guys are able to play their way onto the field, especially as the season goes on.

Outside of the established veterans like Tory Horton, Melquan Stovall, Ty McCullouch and Dante Wright, there will be some roles that are there for the taking. That’s not a shot at anyone on the roster that wasn’t mentioned. It’s just that when you throw the ball 60 times per game, you’re going to need a whole stable of bodies that are able to step in at various points. Not to mention that the staff has been honest since the day they came in about their desire to significantly improve the depth at the position.
