Katina Smith will finally get the chance to see her son play football.

In the NFL.

For the Denver Broncos.

Demaryius Thomas will finally get the chance to play football with his mother there … in attendance.

He’ll know when he celebrates a touchdown pass from Peyton Manning and looks into the stands, his mom will be there celebrating and smiling back to him.

With all of the talk of his contract with the Broncos and the questions of “well they get it done in time,” none of that matters. The speculation and the innuendo cease (or should) when this happened.

This is more than football – though it is what Thomas does for a profession. And he’s really good at it.

This is about life. About love.

Smith, the mother of the Denver wide receiver, was one of 46 people commuted by President Obama on Monday. The 46 people commuted is the largest number since the 1960s, according to the USA Today.

Smith and Thomas’ grandmother, Minnie Thomas, were arrested in 1999 for narcotics trafficking, and have been in prison since Demaryius Thomas was 11-years-old. Smith was scheduled to be released in 2017, while Minnie Thomas received a life sentence.

The White House issued a press release explaining the action, saying that “federal sentencing practices can, in too many instances, lead nonviolent drug offenders to spend decades, if not life, in prison.”

It and the President also sent a letter like the one below.

Fans get caught up in the business of football.

They play general manager (when they’re not playing head coach during the season) and say with absolute certainty what should/will happen.

Take a cue from Thomas.

Put the business side of football to rest for one day and revel in the fact a mother will get to see her son again.
