Unlike the NFL Draft’s opening round, the Broncos watched and waited until the end of the second round to make their pick, and they used it on 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive tackle Adam Gotsis out of Georgia Tech.
Of course, Broncos County immediately learned that Gotsis is a native Australian who played his first snap of American football with the Yellow Jackets in 2012, but here are five other things to know about the former Atlantic Coast Conference standout:
1. In metric terms – of course, used by the fleet of Aussie media reports covering Gotsis’ NFL quest – the defensive lineman is listed as measuring a “hulking 195 centimeters and 127 kilograms.” University of Utah punter Tom Hackett, the two-time reigning Ray Guy Award winner, is another former Australian Rules standout who could be drafted before the weekend is done.
2. Gotsis is one of the older draftees in the class of 2016 as he will turn 24 on Sept. 23. That makes him older than several current Broncos, including Shane Ray, Kapri Bibbs, Trevor Siemian, Cody Latimer and Shaq Barrett. He’s only a year younger than Ronnie Hillman, whose rookie season of 2012 was Gotsis’ freshman year at Georgia Tech.
3. Gotsis started his final 37 games at Georgia Tech but is recovering from an ACL tear he suffered on the first play from scrimmage in a game against Virginia last Halloween – two weeks after recording a career-high eight tackles and a fumble recovery against eventual national-runner-up Clemson. That injury limited him to nine games in his senior season, but he still earned honorable-mention All-ACC recognition and reportedly has just resumed running and lifting weights.
4. Not only did the Aussie record 12.5 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss in four years with the Jackets, he also batted down five passes and displayed a knack for blocking kicks, swatting down four of them – three field goals and a PAT.
5. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay included Gotsis on his draft underrated list, saying he possesses the second-best “motor” among the draft’s defensive linemen, placing him ahead of top-20 picks Joey Bosa and Shaq Lawson in that regard. Even more relevant to the followers of the Orange & Blue, McShay compared Gotsis’ game to that of Malik Jackson’s on the four-letter network’s draft coverage Friday night.
