I don’t know too much about the ins and outs of player contracts, but I do appreciate what Sakic has done. He is giving these guys who have worked so hard a chance to finish what they started. Go Avs Go!

I am glad Sakic played it safe and didn’t give away the farm for a rental player or other. JGP brought Ottawa a lot of draft picks, pretty expensive, we will see how that turns out for the Islanders.

Maybe Sakic goes all in in a couple years at the end of the MacKinnon window. Whether that is before or after Mack’s next contract, time will tell. Definitely in the next 2-5 years I would think. Just checked, but is Mack only 24 and has 3 more years before UFA on his current deal. Crazy Huh? Sakic can afford to be patient this year, especially with all the looming contracts.

VN for a 2021 fourth rounder is cheap insurance for another depth guy who will help us out.

AJ, Would the Avs have been better off claiming Domingue off of waivers as opposed to trading for Hutchison? Which of the two goalies do you think is better? Losing Rosen doesn’t break my heart. Smart to get a NHL back up now, like you said, would have been smarter last summer when you wouldn’t have had to give up assets.

Here is to getting a healthy team ASAP! And a third Stanley Cup!!

You mean…

Kaut *wasn’t* being showcased?

Zadorov wasn’t traded??

Jost wasn’t traded???

They weren’t trying to reunite Drouin with MacKinnon?!?

I appreciate DNVR’s level headed approach to rumors, and the fact you aren’t trying to be the first to be right. Your analysis and approach are top notch.

If I had to bet, I’d say sakic kicked the tires pretty hard, but also if that’s the case, kudos for not pulling the trigger. Super inflated prices this year.

This says a lot: “Sakic’s eyes are still on the possibility of multiple prizes”
I see it this way; Colorado prefers having a 7-8 year window with a team that’s a say 9/10 v.s. a 3 year window with a team that’s a 9.5/10.
He is trying to build a dynasty in the likes of chicago/pittsburgh and not a “2 or 3 shot kick at the can” team like say Nas, Stl, Wpg, etc.

Something I’m not sure about with Kaut. If Kaut does stick this year and plays next year with the Avalanche does he need to be protected in the expansion draft?

Sakic has shown throughout his tenure as GM that he is willing to show confidence with the guys in locker room for them to compete in the playoffs without much of an upgrade at the trade deadline. Keeping the high draft picks and prospects is smart and something he has been building for a couple of years now. I wouldn’t break that up either. At least not for what was available at the trade deadline.

I’m perfectly content with not spending much at the deadline. Could we have gone bigger, especially with our assets? Sure. Historically speaking, it rarely works out in a team’s favor, and often results in problems down the line. Championship teams typically add minimal depth at the deadline. For anyone interested, I recommend a viewing of The Hockey Guy’s video overview posted on youtube today of the last 10 cup champs and the pieces they’ve added at the deadline. None of them were big splashes at the time. I also like that smaller moves send the team a message of trust, and that we’re not trying to shoehorn in new players at the end of the season. This Avs team can compete with anyone, today. Better to make the big trades in the offseason without a short fuse on them.
