DENVER — Yesterday, the Colorado Rockies promoted 21-year-old, right-handed fireballer German Marquez to MLB. Today, he has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year.
He pitched 135.2 innings over 21 games with a 2.85 ERA with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats in order to win the award. He posted a strikeout rate of 8.36 and a walk rate of 2.19.
Marquez throws a fastball that can touch 99 mph and has a sinker that gets all the way up to 96-97 mph. He throws a big curveball to back that up but his changeup is a work in progress.
He will likely work out of the bullpen to finish the 2016 season since the Rockies already have a six-man rotation and could use all the help they can get in the ‘pen.
